Important Lessons About the Word of Wisdom This Week

Hola Mamá! Muy bien! Y tu? First, it’s super hot here, and it’s not even summer yet. I’m a little sick, but not bad. It’s just because it is so hot during the day and cold at night.

So last Monday after p-day ended, we went and visited Jorge and Daniel to see how they are doing. Daniel still wants more time before he gets baptized, and that’s okay. We aren’t going to force him, but we are going to keep passing by and work with him. There’s still a few things Jorge needs to do before his baptism as well, but more on that later.

Tuesday when we went to the district meeting, we got a surprise visit from the Mission President. During part of the meeting, President acted as the bishop and we practiced offering service to him and asking for his help too. It was good! Later we had a lesson with Miguel Angel about the Word of Wisdom and it was rather interesting. Interesting because he believes that all plants on Earth are for the consumption of man, including a number of drugs and mushrooms. We explained the how, why and blessings of the Word of Wisdom and invited him to pray about it to ask God if it really is necessary. He said he will and that he will even try to live the commandment little by little. I have high hopes and prayers for him.

Wednesday we decided to use the morning to contact and find a bunch of new people to teach, but we got a call from Elder Loomis where he told us he wanted us to do whatever we could to pass by and visit Jorge and Daniel and commit them to be baptized Saturday. So we had to cancel a few appointments and go meet with them. We planned out what we were going to say, scriptures to share and had our plan set and ready to go, but it didn’t go too well. Jorge kept getting mad at Daniel, so Daniel was mad at his dad and it was hard to feel the spirit. We did our best to share but because the spirit wasn’t there, we weren’t able to commit them to be baptized this week.

Thursday, was awesome and bad at the same time. Bad because we went to see Jorge and Daniel and we found Jorge drunk in his house. His neighbor invited him to drink so he went. We asked him if he had gone drinking other times within the past couple of weeks and he said yes. This was frustrating because I asked and verified with him before if he was living the Word of Wisdom and he told me yes, there were no problems. As a result of this he can’t be baptized right now. He still wants to get baptized so we’re not giving up on him but he will now have to wait until he can stop drinking for a minimum of two weeks. The awesome part of the day was when we went to eat lunch with Familia Angel Gutierrez and they gave us BBQ ribs and we ended the day with 8 new contacts! Also a member met us at the super market close to where we live and bought us some food and other stuff we needed, to show thanks to us for being missionaries!

Friday was such a super hot day and we didn’t have any appointments before lunch so we set out to contact. For the first while we didn’t have any luck but we kept knocking and doing our best to stay positive. The street we were in was very long and had lots of side streets that were dead ends. It was past the hour of lunch but we still didn’t have 4 contacts. My comp was dying of hunger and we were both super hot but we still had one more side road so I said, let’s just knock this last street. The last street was the best part! We found 5 contacts! Then at lunch in the restaurant we found 2 more contacts! After that it got a little crazy because the member who bought us the things at the store the day before, kept messaging us telling us he was drinking and thinking of killing himself because of things going on in his life. We tried giving his number to the Bishopric so they could talk to him but he only wanted to talk to us through messages. Eventually we got him to tell us where he was so we told the Bishopric who was able to go find him and get him help.

Saturday was really good. We were able to go contacting and find 4 contacts before lunch. While we were contacting people, we talked to a few men who were drunk. They didn’t hug us this time but they were really friendly. After lunch we had a lesson with Daniel to see how he is doing. He still wants to be baptized but is looking for his own answer. He wants to get more knowledge about the Book of Mormon. We were also able to have a lesson with a man named Antonio Juarez, his daughter and family. It was crazy at first cause kids were running back and forth everywhere. After the kids left though we were able to talk and it was really cool.

Sunday we called everyone again in the morning to remind them about church. Only Jorge and Daniel came though. Concepcion and her husband said they would be there but they never showed up so we don’t know what happened. Anyway, after church we had some lessons but no one was home, so we went contacting and found a few more contacts. I think we ended the day with 5. We also talked with Jorge and Daniel and we visited with Nicolasa and she gave us tamales!! :)

I’m gonna end for now. I love you guys and hope you have a great week! Thank you for all your love and support!
